Hiya. So I've signed up for a ton of clubs and activities as a freshmen in vet school.. One of these duties I have signed up for is the 'equine emergency team'. You are put on a monthly schedule where you are on call about 1-2x/month where you can be paged anytime from 5pm to 5am... I've done the equine rotation once before and was not called in. I'm also on the 'small animal icu' team, which is the same idea, but with small animal.. I was on that last week and did not get called in... in actuality, most people don't get called in I think. Depending on what is going on of course... so tonight is another night that I'm on equine emergency duty... and guess what. I GOT A PAGE.. I talked to someone at the front desk over the phone and they told me to expect a page between 3 and 4 am for a colic. So I'm excited to go.. also sad at the fact that I am loosing sleep. MEH! I think I'm more excited though.. I haven't worked with horses, so I pretty much have no experience with equine.. Hopefully this will help.. =/ Although it can probably only help so much. I mean.. I worked 2 years in a small animal hospital and even through that, I feel like it took me so long to learn what I know now. Of course, I was a kennel person for like 5 months, so that kind of nicked into the time.. but I mean, learning how to draw blood, place catheters.. being careful with medications and learning what they are for.. what you learn to expect in an emergency situation with patients, doctors and owners... When I think about everything that I learned in that amount of time.. and realizing that I could always learn more.. it's kind of scary when you think about how little everyone really knows...
Anyway.. my original plan was to wake up at 6 am to shower and get ready for school... now that my plans have been altered.. I took a shower now b/c I figure I'm not going to wake up at 6 am to take a shower when I have to wake up possibly at 3 am and go straight to KSU's hospital... plus if I do that and if they have to go into surgery.. then I really won't have time to come home and shower. If in the case I get out early (meaning no sx)... then I may come home and just go back to sleep... I donno. If I get out later than 1 hour, I'll probably just stay at school and study until class starts (or fall asleep at my desk with drool coming out of my mouth).
Anyway... my hair is dry now... so sleep for a couple hours at least! =)
